Ophthalmologist Dr. Anthony Roberts is the founder and chief eye physician of Shady Grove Ophthalmology in Maryland. In this capacity, Dr. Anthony Roberts and his team provide comprehensive eye care, including LASIK and PRK procedures, along with such surgical and medical treatments as dysfunctional lens surgery.

Dysfunction lens surgery is performed to correct issues relating to dysfunctional lens syndrome (DLS). This syndrome occurs as people age and is characterized by natural changes in the lens of the eye. Most DLS changes begin around the age of 42 and are divided into different stages. These stages are briefly described below:

Stage 1
The first stage of DLS is often referred to as presbyopia. In this stage, the lens starts losing its flexibility. As a result, individuals find it increasingly difficult to focus on things up close. Most people who have stage 1 DLS are between the ages of 42 and 50 years old.

Stage 2
After the age of 50, the lens begins yellowing. Because of this, the amount of light that gets into the lens is dramatically decreased, thus reducing the overall clarity of both near and far vision. While people in stage 1 can often get away with reading glasses to correct their vision, those in stage 2 may need a refractive lens exchange (RLE) procedure to replace the problematic lens.

Stage 3
By stage 3 DLS, the person has developed a full cataract that significantly impacts vision. Most people reach this stage of DLS after the age of 65 and they will undergo cataract surgery at an average age of 73. Vision in stage 3 DLS cannot be restored until the cataract is treated.
